Funds will be released when the military steps down.
On Wednesday, President Biden announced that the United States would be placing sanctions on the nation of Myanmar. This action comes as a result of last week’s coup where the military of Myanmar deposed the elected president and took control of the government. The orders prevent the generals of Myanmar from accessing roughly $1 billion in funds held in the United States.
The actions will remain in place until the military gives up power in the south-east Asian nation, according to a statement released by the White House. “The people of Burma are making their voices heard, and the world is watching,” the president said, “We’ll be ready to impose additional measures and we’ll continue to work with our international partners to urge other nations to join us in these efforts.”
